Stonehill College Fresco Project

Discovering Devotion

Tusa, Sicily

This year’s on-site fresco project took us to Tusa, on the northern coast of Sicily, for a large- scale permanent and public fresco at The Officina Stamperia del Notaio. After visits to Palermo, Cefalù, Caccamo Castle, and Piazza Armerina to learn about the rich culture of Greek and Roman civilization and the Byzantine and Arab-Norman artistic traditions, students began their fresco project. It involved research in flora and fish species that define the local environment, economy, and cuisine. The fresco, in three layers mortar, took place over two “giornate,” and kept us working until after midnight. Each student contributed with individual drawings in what was finally an intensive group project, combining the many ideas and styles, much like the cooperation of the many cultures expressed in Medieval Sicily.
