Spannocchia, Siena

Artist, Craftsman, Alchemist, January 2018. Stonehill College students immersed themselves in the relationship between artistic and agricultural production, and art history from Florence to Fabriano. Staying in the beautiful Civitella Ranieri, we explored paper making, paper marbling, parchment making, early photography techniques, and prosciutto and salame production, and learned about fruits and grains at Archeologia Arborea.

Stonehill College Fresco Project at Tenuta Spannocchia, Siena. May 2016

This is Part 1 of a twelve part project, featuring the twelve months of the year. Based on medieval manuscripts (such as Books of Hours) and local Sienese designs (lower register), the month of May depicts a scene of courtly love and hawking, with the zodiac symbols for taurus and gemini. As always, our projects are executed entirely by students in true fresco technique, with three layers of mortar and traditional earth pigments.
